OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

What Is OPAL Play?

At our school, we are proud to follow the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach to play. OPAL is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools transform playtimes into richer, more imaginative, and more active experiences. It encourages children to explore, collaborate, and create through high‑quality outdoor play, supporting their physical, social, and emotional development.

Why OPAL?

OPAL Play brings a wide range of benefits to our children, including:

  • Improved wellbeing and happiness through active, outdoor play.
  • Better social skills, as children learn to communicate, negotiate, and work together.
  • Increased creativity and resilience as they try new ideas, solve problems, and take safe, supported risks.
  • More inclusive play, ensuring every child has meaningful, purposeful opportunities to join in.
  • Greater independence and confidence, built through freedom to play in different ways.

How OPAL Fits Into Our School Day

OPAL is woven into the rhythm of our school day. Breaks and lunchtimes become opportunities for children to engage in a wide variety of play experiences—from building and den‑making to imaginative role‑play, physical challenges, and quiet spaces for reflection. Our staff team supports children in making positive play choices, ensuring that every playtime is safe, engaging, and full of possibilities.

OPAL Play helps us create a school environment where play is valued, children thrive, and every day brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and enjoy being a child.
